Slovakia’s mental health system is notable for its reliance on institutional care for people with intellectual and mental health disabilities. The reason is the virtual absence of community mental health care. MDAC is working to encourage the development of community care, and to reduce the automatic recourse to care within institutions.
We have also campaigned for the government to commit to banning cage beds in social care institutions and psychiatric hospitals. Cage beds are now banned in social care homes, but not in psychiatric hospitals, despite requests from the UN Human Rights Committee and the European Committee for the Prevention of Torture to do so. Although Slovakia has signed the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, it has failed to ratify it. See why it should ratify now, and how you can join us in our campaign to encourage ratification by clicking here [2] .
