MDAC participates in UN meeting to prevent ill-treatment against people with disabilities

On 16 - 17 December 2011, MDAC participated at the “Regional Consultation for Europe on Prevention of Torture and Protection of Victims of Torture – Especially Persons Deprived of their Liberty” held at the UN in Geneva. The consultation aimed to identify concrete steps and forms of cooperation between international, regional, and national actors in the field.

Are persons with disabilities valued less than other detainees?

11 November 2011, Geneva. MDAC participated at the Global Forum on the OPCAT (Optional Protocol to the UN Convention against Torture) organized by the Association for Prevention of Torture. The theme of the two-day Forum was ‘Preventing Torture, Upholding Dignity: from Pledges to Actions’.

African disability strategy under consideration

31 August 2011. MDAC sent its comments to the Secretariat of the African Decade of Persons with Disabilities in order to contribute to a meeting which starts today and concludes Friday in Johannesburg, South Africa, where delegates will discuss the pros and cons of developing an African Continental Disability Strategy. 

MDAC contributes to community mental health book

29 August 2011. The “Oxford Textbook of Community Mental Health” (edited by Graham Thornicroft, George Szmukler, Kim T Mueser, and Robert E. Drake) has just been published. The book contains a chapter on “International human rights and community mental health” written by Oliver Lewis (MDAC Executive Director) and Peter Bartlett (former MDAC Board Chair). Article 33: Coordinate! Monitor! Participate!

12 April 2011, Geneva (Switzerland) and Budapest (Hungary). At the United Nations in Geneva today, MDAC launched a 60-page publication entitled, “Building the Architecture for Change: Guidelines on Article 33 of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD).”
